The 5 C’s of failing to find your dream job

Guest Post by Spencer Peterson

In commemoration of our second annual March Marketing Case Competition, we would like to give you a treat from one of last year’s winners, Spencer Peterson. Here are his insights derived from Marty Neumeier’s book “Zag”:

After reading “Zag”, I can put a finger on why I believe students fail to find their dream job. Here are five reasons:

1) Clutter – I heard that at our school, 200 applicants applied for one position – they were taking 1 intern for the summer. Is your resume really that good? Hopefully there is something else that catches the recruiters’ attention. Job markets are saturated, but somehow people forget that. Applying for a job should be just as strategic as choosing a new product to launch.

2) Cliché – How many times has a recruiter seen “I am a great people-person” or “I have excellent computer / design / etc. skills” on a resume. Resumes are usually one big zig. We are telling them how we are exactly the same as everyone else. We need to focus on finding our “niche” by taking a “scissor”-like approach to finding a job.

3) Cloud – What is the cloud? It is the group of jobs that gets in the way of our dream job. The cloud represents the jobs that are visible to all. At first, it seems like they are the most obtainable, but in fact, everyone else is chasing the same cloud. You have to be “better, faster, and cheaper” to win. The cloud is the barrier between those who are willing to go “above and beyond” into the blue skies of their dream job and those who are not.

4) Clock – When is it best to pursue a job? When everyone else starts, right? Or when they post a job posting on their website, right? Most people fail to beat the clock and they end up competing with many more people than they have to. If you do it right, you might just be competing with yourself.

5) Click – Just like the old real estate adage is “location, location, location”, for looking for a job, it should read, “relationships, relationships, relationships”. Most people fail to make an effort to “click” with anyone at the company where they want to work. They rely on a piece of paper to do the “clicking”.

When these steps are avoided, we develop our own personal brand’s zag. This is done by (1) finding a way to break through the clutter, (2) being the “anti-cliché”, (3) penetrating the cloud to pursue the jobs we want / make for ourselves, (4) being a first-mover and end up with offers in our hands before the company starts recruiting (if they were even going to recruit at all), (5) developing meaningful and personal relationships that will attach strong emotions to our resume.

How not to get a job

This year the BYU Marketing Association has been doing a lot of really cool stuff. Now it’s time to do something even cooler. Answer these questions and see what you think:

-          Do I want to win $3000?

-          Do I want to get recognized at a banquet in front of 40 marketing executives from companies like Google, Nike,   and Wal-Mart?

-          Do I want to go to a killer kick-off event with free In-N-Out Burger and prizes on March 4?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, please read on…

On Thursday, March 4, at 5:00pm in W408 TNRB we’ll be kicking off the second annual BYU Marketing Association Case Competition sponsored by Union Pacific Railroad!

-          Yes, there will be free In-N-Out.

-          Yes, there will be sweet give-aways.

-          And yes, you will blow your mind with how cool this competition is!

Student teams of 3 to 4 will be given two weeks to create a marketing solution to the case problem that will be presented on March 4. The submission deadline is March 17 @ 11:59pm. Three finalist teams will be selected and will present their cases on April 1 @ 11:00am to a panel of marketing executives and an audience of a hundred-plus students. The teams will be judged and presented with the following awards:

-          Third Place: $500

-          Second Place: $1000

Should all majors participate? – YES

Do I have to join the club to participate? – YES (but signup is easy and it’s worth it)

Will doing this competition help me get a job or internship? – YES!

So what’s the best way not to get a job? – It’s simple. Don’t do this competition.

Seth Godin: Are You a Genius?

The opening remarks at the startup princess luncheon

Some BYUMA leadership recently attended a lunch where Seth Godin spoke. In this clip from his opening remarks, he asks the question, “are you a genius?” Listen carefully to how he defines a genius. You may surprise yourself if you think outside the quadrilateral parallelogram.

Getting More Out of Social Networks

Many different Social Media Sites and How they all interlink

Social Media Starfish

These are some of the biggest websites on the Internet today, and they all are part of the Web 2.0 birthed social network movement. Social Media is not a fad; it’s becoming a main means for communication. So how are you communicating?  A large portion of students are on at least one of these social networks. How can we as business students and future professionals utilize them to our advantage? I’ll attempt to explore and give insights that may give you a leg up…because I love you.

1.) It’s all about making real connections.
Actually networking on social networks? That’s crazy talk.

It’s easy to add a contact and do nothing else but look at their cutesy profile picture once and forget about it. It takes thought and consideration to actually reach out to a contact in order to make a real connection. These small interactions foster a relationship that could be fruitful for hopefully both parties. So be interactive! Comment on people’s postings, reply, send friendly thank you messages, and post content that they may enjoy.

Now all of this can be taken into context with the audience you re dealing with. Seth Godin talks about tribes. If you’re a social entrepreneur, you’re going to make sure that your following other non-profit/social entrepreneur groups. If you’re an aspiring musician you may want to connect with clubs, other bands, potential fans of the same genre, and influential people who may help you catch a break. Marketing students at BYU may want to connect with BYUMA on twitter for updates (one of my many shameless plugs), Faculty members on LinkedIn, watch YouTube SEO videos, listen to credible marketing podcasts, follow Seth Godin’s blog, etc….

The goal or benefit? To have connections pull through for you when you need it. Remember though that you should be ready and able to do the same for them.  The point is, people loved to be loved, have their ideas be validated, and be apart of something. So spread the love and yahoo for friendship!!

2.) Credibility
Social Networks can be a resume! So brand yourself and be prepared.

If you have facebook, make sure privacy settings are set appropriately so recruiters aren’t thrown off by an embarrassing photo or that you’re a fan of “Soulja Boy Tell em” or “I Have Tourettes When I Play Video Games”( yes that really exists, and no I’m not a fan). I would also recommend tweeting relevant things to your tribe, making sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date, and blogging meaningful and credible things.

3.) Set yourself apart
So whoop de doo, everyone and their dog is on a social network!  What are you going to do different?

Hopefully by being linked to your tribe, interacting, posting credible things, and branding yourself you already have set yourself apart. However, you can do more! One way is to stay on top of trends. If you’re on top of the trends and have done your homework, then you should be able to start to strategize/predict. By strategizing and voicing ideas, you can become a leader and game changer in a certain area.

To stay “in the know” you can do a few things:

  • Reading popular business like made to stick, good to great, the tipping point, etc…
  • RSS feed and follow some major blogs that are relevant to what you like (HINT: like this one!!)
  • Check the WSJ, NY Times, and other journals in your related field.
  • Chat with professors.

From this point, you can start creating content that will be beneficial to your audience. SHARE THEM on your social network, get feedback (LinkedIn questions) and grow!

Other things to consider

Have fun and don’t take it too serious.

There are many tools to help you along the way. For example, I love Hootsuite for twitter.

What’s up with Google Buzz? I would love to hear your thoughts

I also have a few thoughts about promotions and social networks. I feel social networks shouldn’t be used mainly as a way of attaining new customers. They should be a pull. Well…Youtube viral videos can cause a stir. So I think that things like facebook pages are more of an informational platform that can be used to feed a love group. It’s more to reinforce in my opinion. I guess this all depends on if your goal is lead generation or informational or what have you…. anyway. I’m just rambling and would love to hear your feedback!!! So network on!
